Getting There
When you're traveling a great distance, some delays can be expected. Other holdups,
however, can be avoided with a little planning.
Traveling by Plane
Get to the airport early. Many airlines recommend checking in as early as three hours
for some international flights.
Your airline will be able to provide you with check-in procedures for your particular
flight.
Airport Security
If it has been a while since you have booked a commercial flight, you may want to
consult with the airport for advice on navigating national and international airports.
Flying with Infants
Getting through security can take a little longer with kids in tow. Compact strollers
and car seats must go through the x-ray machines. Larger strollers may need to be
emptied and screened manually.
Virtually all airlines allow you to gate check your baby's stroller at the end of
the jet way, and then pick it up the moment you get off the plane. Some airlines also
offer early boarding for families traveling with infants. Check with your airline
to be sure.
Traveling by Car
As tempting as it may be to pack as many miles as possible between breaks, keep in
mind that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends drivers take
a scheduled break every two hours on long road trips.
Traveling with pets? Experts recommend you give Fido a break every two hours as well.
Renting a Car
Rental agencies such as Avis and Budget offer special rates for military personnel who book through Military Vacations for Families from Armed Forces Vacation Club.
Traveling by Public Transportation
Perhaps a rental car isn't practical or economically feasible in your destination.
Your Military Vacations for Families from Armed Forces Vacation Club property should be able to provide information about public transportation in the
area.
