Lake Okeechobee

Lake Okeechobee is an area that is rich in culture and beautiful scenery. Okeechobee translates to “big water” in the language of the Hitchiti, who were the indigenous group to first inhabit the area. The lake is the largest freshwater lake in Florida and is often referred to as the “inland sea.” The locals cherish their farming heritage by continuing to grow crops like sugarcane and citrus fruits. They are also known for being neighborly, so don’t be surprised if they say hello and invite you to a community event during your visit! It’s a popular destination for outdoor lovers, especially those interested in observing wildlife. The 110-mile Okeechobee Scenic Trail is full of wildlife from alligators to egrets and bobcats.

The summer months draw the least visitor traffic with temperatures consistently in the low 90s and precipitation unlikely. The most popular time to visit Lake Okeechobee is September and October, when temperatures average in the low 90s and mid-80s. There are fun events happening year-round that are family-friendly, as well as numerous state parks to visit and enjoy.

There are several small towns and recreation centers that surround the lake for visitors to check out either independently or during the Big O Hike that takes place in November each year (109-mile hike in nine days):

  • Clewiston: guided fishing trips, golfing, museum dedicated to the history of Lake Okeechobee
  • Moore Haven: large water park, tennis/racquetball/volleyball courts, River Walk Park
  • Lakeport: Harney Pond Canal access area, boardwalk with marshland views
  • Buckhead Ridge: Okee-Tantie Campground and Marina, pet- and family-friendly
  • Okeechobee: Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, bicycling, bird-watching, and hiking
  • Chancy Bay Recreation Area: cabins and boat rentals
